Monday DAY 24th and 31st of March and the 7th of April.
Thursday afterschool (3:15ish to 5:30) 27th of March and the 3rd and 10th of April.
We are taking the humble pallet and turning them into works of art, perhaps ingenious contraptions… or maybe just something practical. The reason we are using pallets is that the wood is free, it is rubbish yet was once a tree! That the pallets are common means we can take risks and make as many mistakes as we need without fear of wasting that beautiful piece of rimu. Pallets can be turned into beautiful objects as is evidenced by this beautiful cabinet bought at the Nelson Market.

Skills we will be using in our projects include:
- imagination
- 3D spacial awareness
- measuring (I so need to practice this)
- all the addition and subtraction that goes along with this
- sawing (this is a skill that I have noticed that being given opportunity to practice I have got better at)
- use of many other hand tools – appropriate use, and tool names
- to screw or to nail?
- how to get a good finish
- respect of our bodies and equipment
- health and safety!
- communication of concept – 3D drawing perhaps
- the properties of wood
Real skills with a real world application… though perhaps not the catapult Helena and I made to fire loquat seeds!
…. and now I have an excuse to re-watch Good with wood…
